Walk-In Clinic or Emergency Department: Where Should You Go?

Choosing the right place for medical care can be difficult, especially when symptoms appear unexpectedly. Walk-in clinics and emergency departments serve different purposes. The seriousness of the concern—not convenience alone—should guide the decision.
When a walk-in clinic may be appropriate
A walk-in clinic may be suitable for a concern that needs timely medical assessment but does not appear life-threatening. Examples may include cold or flu symptoms, sore throat, minor infections, rashes, urinary symptoms and appropriate minor injuries. A physician may recommend further testing, follow-up or emergency assessment after evaluating the patient.
When to seek emergency care
Call 911 or visit the nearest emergency department for a medical emergency. Warning signs can include severe difficulty breathing, symptoms of stroke, severe or persistent chest pain, loss of consciousness, seizures, uncontrolled bleeding, serious head injury, major burns, significant trauma or a severe allergic reaction.
Infants, pregnant patients, older adults and people with complex medical conditions may require a different level of care depending on their symptoms. When in doubt about a potentially serious or rapidly worsening condition, seek urgent professional guidance.
What to bring to a walk-in visit
Bring your Ontario health card when applicable, an up-to-date medication list and any documents connected to the concern. Be prepared to explain when symptoms began, whether they are changing and what treatments you have already tried.
